“Living Hive of Tatev” — A Children’s Space as a Model of the Future

“Living Hive of Tatev” — A Children’s Space as a Model of the Future

Once, the monastery was not only a spiritual center, but also a place of work, knowledge, and daily life. People cultivated the land, created, and passed knowledge on to future generations. Among these traditions was beekeeping. Honey, born of nature, symbolized life, strength, and renewal.

Today, special attention is given to the importance of beekeeping for the region — both in terms of preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, and supporting the sustainable economic development of local communities.

That is why, during this pilgrimage, we are coming together to create a non-commercial, thematic children’s playground in Tatev, inspired by the “World of Bees” — a space where children will not just play, but also feel a connection with nature.

Project Description

The project envisions the creation of an integrated play space located in public fruit orchards near the Halidzor station of the “Wings of Tatev” ropeway.

The playground will be fully open and accessible to all, serving both local children and visiting families. Its design will be based on the theme of bees and honey production, reflecting the biodiversity of Syunik and the traditional culture of beekeeping. Tatev has historically strong traditions of honey production, and the development of this sector is considered a regional priority.

The playground will not only reflect this cultural identity, but also help local children understand their role as future carriers of these traditions. Through play and educational elements, the project will foster interest in beekeeping and respect for the labor involved in honey production.

In addition, the playground will serve not only as a recreational space, but also as an important social hub. It will become a meeting point for local children and visiting peers. Given Tatev’s geographic isolation, such an environment is especially valuable: it will help overcome barriers, encourage intercultural communication, and broaden local children’s horizons through interaction with peers from other cities and countries.

This initiative aims to address the lack of modern, safe, and educational play infrastructure in the Tatev community, while also contributing to broader regional development and family tourism.

Why Is This Important?

The Tatev community has more than 5,500 residents, over 1,000 of whom are children. Despite this, the municipality lacks a modern, development-oriented playground. Existing play areas are limited, outdated, or do not support children’s physical, cognitive, and social development.

Local schools and families do not have a safe and organized outdoor environment for group activities.

At the same time, the “Wings of Tatev” ropeway receives over 100,000 visitors annually. Surveys show that around 50% of respondents are interested in having a dedicated children’s play area. The absence of such infrastructure limits both community well-being and the growth of family tourism.

The project includes the design and construction of a safe, thematic playground in the public orchards near the “Wings of Tatev” stations.

Beneficiaries:

  • Direct beneficiaries: More than 1,000 children from Tatev and nearby villages
  • Indirect beneficiaries: Families, schools and kindergartens, community organizations, and families of tourists visiting Tatev

Sustainability:

In nature, nothing exists on its own. Every bee brings its drop — and together, honey is created. You are that bee, bringing your part.

A pilgrimage gains meaning when we continue the chain:
past → present → future

Like a garden already bearing fruit, this project will become something alive — and by next May, children will already be playing and learning here.

And your contribution:

  • will remain in this place
  • will become part of the future
  • will continue to make an impact — without you, and because of you
